Outside, in the darkness, up the winding road that was lost behind the trees, the wind was calling from the crossroads. The failed poet heard the snakelike hiss echo as if uttered by the woods themselves. The door rattled as he sat not knowing whether to throw another log into the fireplace or to open the house for the wind to come in and him to go out, following the call.


He could make out his own name. Feeling the cold in his very bones, he still sat, as if he could stop the passage of time.


The walls seemed as frail as his resolve, as if the weight of the night could crush them in an instant. He was shut within.
