lyrics

The scent of wet earth was strong in the night air. The trees rustled on the old dirt road I walked steadily but without haste.
Presently it seemed to me that I could discern up on the hazy hill some veiled light that must surely be the goal of my journey, at the end of the pathway I now trod.

Chorus
The night was cool, but inside my cloak my fingers touched a frozen surface. The blade I carried embodied my intent: strong, straight, unyielding, but still so cold.

I all but covered the lattice of my lamp, even though in the darkness its dim glow could scarcely resemble more than a ghost.

During my ascent, I saw a black shape moving, slither across the path in front of me I turned my lamp It was a very large snake that quickly disappeared.

Chorus
The night was cool, but inside my cloak my fingers touched a frozen surface. The blade I carried embodied my intent: strong, straight, unyielding, but still so cold.

I was somewhat startled. Could this be an omen? And what did it mean, what could it presage to the venture at hand?
